Horror Fables Exhibit
Carleton University Art Gallery
April 27 to June 14, 2009

Ho Yan (Howie) Tsui was born on January 19, 1978 in Hong Kong. Several months later, he and his mother rejoined their family in Lagos, Nigeria. During these nascent years, Howie: a) went on safaris in Kenya, b) got a concussion on the London Bridge, c) confronted ghosts in a haunted hotel in Manilla, and d) during a near-fatal high fever, had hallucinations of ceiling-piercing rain that showered upon apparitions of Disney characters. In 1983, his family immigrated to Thunder Bay, Ontario, where he began his assimilation into western culture through street hockey and heavy metal music. Tsui's 'suspended adolescent' artistic approach is informed by such experiences. Tsui received his BFA in 2002 from the University of Waterloo and is currently painting and illustrating in Ottawa, Canada.

Geneviève Thauvette has studied Studio Arts at Concordia University and most recently Photography at Algonquin College. She has always been drawn to this medium, as her unusual perspective of life asserts itself with a surrealist nature on the figurative reality it can present.

Genevieve strives, through the juxtaposition of whimsical elements and morose or erotically charged contexts, to evoke earnest emotional responses. She speaks to her audience on a visceral level, but not without a certain subconscious language of her own.

The theme of sexuality is often implied, and it is through her use of such discordant elements as doilies and guns that society's absurd and ironic treatment of the subject is understood.

The textures combined in her work can frequently be unnerving by virtue of their incongruous qualities. Yet, despite their differences, a certain harmony transpires, thus helping to produce the uncanny perception of the visual world she creates.

My artistic practice, rooted in the neo-romantic trajectory of drawing, is fundamentally escapist. As the descendent of several generations of atheistic Canadiens, I did not grow up in a milieu of traditional culture but instead learnt an appreciation of literature and the natural environment. As a result, I'm heavily inspired by the folklore of many other cultures, as well as literature, natural history, topography and the environment. In prints and drawings I portray dream-fueled absurdist situations, which often draw heavily on my cloudy recollection of the storybooks of my childhood, saturated as they were with strange creatures, impossible happenings and oneiric landscapes. These stories created for me a very idiosynchratic conception of a past-that-never-was, and much of my work is directed toward bringing this past into being. In addition, my use of female iconography and of female-associated source material such as lace, ornamentation, and organic material, is a means to investigate themes of passivity and femininity, loss and loneliness, and being at odds with the world.

Furni began as a “custom” furniture operation a little over 4 years ago by Devin Barrette and Mike Giles. These days were are shifting focus more and more to exploring and creating our own designs, we’re still very hands on, from picking the rough lumber all the way to staining, finishing, boxing and shipping the final product. We are just a two man operation, but proud of the flexability and control it gives us over the end product.

People often ask me if my images are digitally created or altered - and in fact it is quite the opposite! In that sense I am a contradiction - my ideas are avant-garde but my techniques are old-school (albeit unconventional). I have no intention of going digital because the qualities of the film itself are integral to the look of my end product. I achieve my effects using light, film, and coloured gels. To understand what is involved in creating one of my photographs, go to the sketches/notes section.

Almost all of my photographs are taken with a large format camera. All of my images exist as transparencies only, until I have a show or client to print them for. Unlike an artist who paints canvases, I wouldn't be able to hang a show on a moments notice because I need time to get the prints done and framed. Except for the bug series that I had printed as giclees, my photos are printed as cibachromes. I've always had my cibachromes done by industry veteran Bob Carnie, and my gallery quality framing done by Kamelia at Elevator.

Because I spent years working in commercial photography before I decided to exhibit, I have a lot of images that have never been exhibited! This web site is an ideal way to allow people to see all of my work that otherwise would sit filed away in a box in my studio. Cost of course prohibits me from printing more of my work than absolutely necessary, and hopefully I will have the opportunity to exhibit some of my older work, while always creating more!

DIY No-Sew Ruffled Christmas Tree Skirt

Materials Needed:
4-1/2' x 4-1/2' piece of canvas
measuring tape
4 yards cream linen
sharp scissors
fray-blocking glue
3 1/3 yards grosgrain ribbon
hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Measure and Cut Canvas

Using a tape measure, mark and cut a square of canvas that is approximately 4-1/2' x 4-1/2' (Image 1). Fold the square into quarters, then over itself to form a triangle with the folded center at point. Cut base in a quarter circle (Image 2). Cut a small quarter circle out of the point (Image 3). Open the skirt until it's folded in half and cut along the radius on one side of the center hole only (Image 4). This will provide a hole for the tree trunk and a slit in the fabric so the skirt can be placed under the tree. Apply no-fray glue along all raw edges and allow to dry. Tip: A canvas painter's drop cloth is an inexpensive material perfect for this project.

Measure and Cut Linen
Using sharp scissors, cut linen fabric lengthwise into 2-inch-wide strips.

Create Ruffles
Preheat hot glue gun. Apply a line of hot glue approximately 1 1/2 inches from outside edge of skirt. Create ruffles by pinching linen with fingers and pushing gathers down onto hot glue (Image 1). Work in small sections, no more than about 12 inches at a time. Continue this process around the entire skirt edge (Image 2). Start the next row approximately 1 1/2 inches above the previous row. Continue adding rows until entire canvas base is covered.

Attach Ties
Cut 10 pieces of grosgrain ribbon into approximately 12-inch lengths. Use hot glue to attach ribbon to underside of tree skirt along slit created in canvas base (Image 1). Evenly space five on one side of slit and five directly opposite. Place skirt under tree and tie ribbons together in bows (Image 2). Note: Although this tree skirt is not machine washable, keep it looking its best by spot-cleaning stains and shaking off needles and loose debris.
