Bring Out Your Deadites! Ottawa Set to Premiere “Evil Dead: The Musical” The city will be seeing red when the Canadian show “Evil Dead: The Musical” hits the stage at its Ottawa premiere in March 2009! The show runs March 12, 13, 14 and 19, 20, 21 at the Kailash Mital Theatre (formerly Alumni Theatre) at Carleton University. It‟s exciting news for the oldest theatre company in Ottawa, Sock „n‟ Buskin Theatre Company, who managed to secure the rights just after it closed in Toronto and before they became restricted again, amidst rumours of a film version of the musical starting production in early 2009. “Evil Dead: The Musical” is a laugh-riot, as it simultaneously pays comedic tribute to and pokes fun at Sam Raimi‟s Evil Dead franchise (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness), along with all B-movies in the horror genre. It surrounds five hapless college students on Spring Break at an isolated cabin in the woods who discover a “Necronomicon” – a book of the dead. What could go wrong? Unwittingly, the group unleashes wise-cracking evil demons bent on murder and mayhem. It‟s a hysterical struggle for survival, where everyone is treated to bad puns, potty-mouth humour and exuberant musical numbers like “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons”, “Look Who’s Evil Now” and “Do the Necronomicon”. After securing approval from Sam Raimi, as well as star Bruce Campbell, “Evil Dead: The Musical” was created by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, then workshopped throughout 2003 and 2004. The workshop production played to sold out audiences in Toronto and then in Montreal at the Just for Laughs Festival in 2006. The show was then taken to New York, where it enjoyed a successful run off- Broadway. The New York Times called it “the next Rocky Horror Show” and Variety said it “was a ridiculous amount of fun”. So, keep your calendars clear, folks. Canderian demons, awesome one-liners and a tribute to the best triology of B-movies EVER – does it get any better than this? This show contains strong language, blood effects and suggestive content – it may not be suitable for children. Discretion is strongly advised. Evil Dead: The Musical is produced by Sock „n‟ Buskin Theatre Company, in association with Erudite Theatre. Tickets can be reserved by calling (613) 520-3770 or [email protected]. $15 General admission/ $12 Students and Seniors Check out the Facebook group – Evil Dead The Musical in Ottawa March 12-14, 19-21 8pm Where: Kailash Mital Theatre (formerly Alumni Theatre)
